Homemade Gin Cocktail Recipe: Wild Rose and Blackberry Syrup

Why settle for classic options when you can create your own signature cocktail at home? Today, we are reinventing Happy Hour with a fruity, tangy, and 100% handcrafted creation: the Wild Rose & Wild Blackberry gin cocktail.

No need to go out to a bar or be an experienced mixologist: with the Wild Rose Ginkit ensemble, crafting your own spirit becomes an activity accessible to everyone.

Making Your Homemade Gin: Selecting the Botanicals

There is a special kind of pride in pouring a glass and saying: "I made it myself!". Through a simple infusion process, you can transform a simple bottle of neutral alcohol into a premium craft gin.

The unique taste of this Wild Rose blend lies in the subtle balance of its hand-selected herbs and spices:

  • Hibiscus flower: it releases floral and tart notes while tinting your homemade gin with that signature rosy hue.
  • Coriander seeds: they bring a subtle citrus touch, which rounds out the woody flavors of the spirit.
  • Larch needles: a true nod to the Quebec boreal forest, they bring a vivid freshness.
  • Rose petals: they enrich the infusion with subtle and delicate floral aromas.
  • Rosehip: the fruit of the wild rose, it offers a fruity, slightly tart note and a touch of astringency on the palate.
  • Juniper berries: the backbone of any good gin, bringing that characteristic woody note.

In addition to being a creative home activity, it makes an ideal gift idea to surprise a loved one who is passionate about spirits.

For the homemade simple blackberry syrup:

  • Fresh blackberries: 150 g (about 1 rounded cup)
  • Water: 125 ml / 4 oz (½ cup)
  • Cane sugar (or white): 100 g (½ cup)

For making the cocktail:

  • Homemade gin crafted from your Wild Rose Ginkit: 60 ml / 2 oz (¼ cup)
  • Homemade blackberry syrup: 30 to 45 ml / 1 to 1.5 oz (about 2 to 3 tbsp)
  • Fresh lemon juice: 20 ml / ¾ oz (about 1 tbsp + 1 tsp)
  • Sparkling water or chilled tonic water: 60 to 90 ml / 2 to 3 oz (¼ to ⅓ cup)
  • Ice cubes: to taste

For garnish (optional):

  • 1 fresh blackberry
  • 1 sprig of fresh thyme

Preparation of the Wild Rose Gin

This recipe requires advance preparation of your wild rose gin and making your homemade blackberry syrup.

To make the gin, nothing could be simpler—just follow the steps below:

  1. Pour the contents of a bottle of neutral alcohol into the empty bottle from the kit.
  2. Add the botanicals and let steep in the bottle for at least 36 hours.
  3. Finally, strain the mixture using the strainer and funnel included in the kit.
  4. Set aside.

Good to know: detailed instructions are also provided on a full instruction sheet inside your Ginkit box.

Preparation of Homemade Simple Blackberry Syrup

To prepare the syrup, follow these steps:

  1. In a saucepan, combine the blackberries, water, and sugar, then bring to medium heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar.
  2. At the first sign of simmering, crush the blackberries with the back of a spoon or a muddler directly in the saucepan to release their juice.
  3. Reduce the heat and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes. The liquid will thicken slightly and take on a deep purple color.
  4. Remove from heat and strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer over a glass jar or bottle, pressing the pulp to extract maximum juice without seeds.
  5. Let cool, then chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour until syrup consistency is reached.

Good news: it's a simple recipe that keeps easily for up to 2 to 3 weeks in the refrigerator in an airtight container, perfect for your next happy hour.

Assembling the Wild Rose Gin and Blackberry Syrup Cocktail

Once your rosy batch is ready and your blackberry syrup is finished, here is how to assemble your cocktail in just 3 minutes flat:

  1. In a cocktail or whiskey glass, pour the lemon juice and your blackberry syrup.
  2. Pour your craft Wild Rose gin into the glass.
  3. Add ice cubes to your liking.
  4. Top up with cold sparkling water or tonic water.
  5. Using a spoon, stir gently from bottom to top to combine all flavors and reveal the beautiful rosy color of your creation.
  6. Finish your preparation by garnishing with a fresh blackberry skewered on a sprig of thyme or mint.
